The Flagler County School Board set the district’s proposed total millage rate at 6.0020 during a July 21 board meeting.

The board’s tentative millage and budget public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 28.

The state determines how much districts must levy in “required local effort” millage, so the district has limited leeway.

The total proposed district budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year is $212 million, district Chief Financial Officer Patty Wormeck told board members in a presentation at the July 21 School Board meeting.

District repairs floor at Buddy Taylor Middle

The flooring at Buddy Taylor Middle School is getting a makeover: The district is partway through the process of fixing the flooring and has about a week to go.

Once that’s done, an environmental contractor, Northstar Contracting Group, will test air samples to see if further work is needed.

Code of Conduct amended

State legislative changes have necessitated amendments to the school district’s Student Code of Conduct.

The state altered the definitions of certain offenses to enable more accurate reporting, requiring the language in the district’s codes to also be amended to accord with the state’s, said John Fanelli, the district’s coordinator of student and behavior supports.

The district is also specifying that when students are wearing sweatshirts or sweaters, the under layer must be within the district dress code if the student removes or unbuttons/unzips the sweater.

The code also adds “hoods” to the list of headgear that may be worn outside on school campuses, but not inside school buildings.

District updates Mental Health Plan

Flagler Schools’ mental health plan this year includes information on the district’s HIPAA-compliant platform for virtual counseling, which was implemented in the Spring 2020 semester.

“We were very quickly able to flip to offering virtual counseling to our students that receive their services through us in the spring when we went to a remote setting,” said Lynette Shott, the district’s executive director of student and community engagement.

“We were able to maintain that HIPPA-compliant web platform that we used and will be able to use actually forever now,” she said. “It really became a plus to be able to access for our students.”

Flagler Technical College partners with DSC

The School Board approved an articulation agreement between the Flagler Technical Institute and Daytona State College that would award college credit for FTI’s certificate apprenticeships for emergency medical technician training, heavy equipment operations, early childhood education, HVAC, and electrician apprenticeships.

District approves agreement with supervisor of elections

The Flagler County School Board approved a change to district policy in order to allow the Supervisor of Elections to use school district property as polling locations.

The agreement allows political signs to be placed in designated areas on the properties on Election Day. They must also be removed on Election Day.
