How much shrimp can you eat in five minutes? For a couple of Ormond Beach firefighters, the answer was 2 pounds, 12.9 ounces.
The RiverGrille on the Tomoka hosted the first annual shrimp-eating contest on Saturday, Feb. 29, where three teams of two competed to see who could eat the most shrimp in that short timeframe. The competing teams were composed of the Officer Cierra Devane and Capt. D.W. Smith of the Ormond Beach Police Deparment; firefighters Rand Bennett and Francis Autorino of Ormond Beach Fire Department, and Mayor Bill Partington and Commissioner Rob Littleton with the city of Ormond Beach.
The contest was a fundraiser for the Police Explorers and Fire Cadets, both youth programs. RiverGrille donated $100 per pound of shrimp consumed for both programs, amounting to $552.50 thanks to the three teams collectively eating a total of 5 pounds, 8.4 ounces of shrimp.
