Good deed punished

10:19 p.m. 6700 block of US 1, Bunnell

Criminal mischief. A 34-year-old man stole a candy bar from a gas station, and, when an employee confronted him, said he'd been hungry. The employee let the man keep the candy bar, and also gave him chips and a drink.

But then, for no apparent reason, the man became angry, picked up a fire extinguisher, broke a plate glass window and emptied the entire extinguisher onto the store's front door, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Deputies arrested him. He said he'd "just gone crazy."

12:50 p.m. 1300 block of Rymfire Drive.

Leaving the scene of an accident. Locals called the Sheriff's Office when a car crashed into a mailbox and three young people bailed out of the car and ran off, leaving it at the crash scene.

A deputy found them in a local park, and the boys began to walk faster when they saw the deputy. Then, when the deputy activated emergency lights, they ran.

The deputy got out of the patrol car and ran after them, and caught one. That teen had a baggie of marijuana in his hand. Another teen ran off, and the third fled but then circled back and cooperated.

The teen who'd crashed the car said he ran because he was scared.
