The Rotary Club of Port Orange-South Daytona volunteered on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex with the Miracle League of Volusia County.
Each rotarian and their families were paired up with a special needs child. All participants had an opportunity to bat, go around the bases and circle back to cross home plate. It's a victory for everyone, as every team and players won the game.
The Epiphany Knights of Columbus are hosting a classic car, truck and bike show next month at the Catholic Church of the Epiphany at 201 Lafayette St.
The event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, and will feature music by DJ Frank Roberts, trophies, food and door prizes. Vehicle registration is $10 payable day of the show and begins at 9 a.m. Sponsorship and registration are tax deductible.
Foundation 37, a local non-profit servicing Port Orange, South Daytona, New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet and Daytona Beach Shores, recently received a $5,000 donations from Jim and Sandy Paytas of Paytas Homes.
The funds were designated to help teachers in the community purchase supplies and items for their classrooms that teachers typically would have spent their own money to buy. The Foundation 37 Board of Directors matched the donation, bringing it to a $10,000 total, according to a press release.
Foundation 37 sent an application to every school in Port Orange, South Daytona, New Smyrna Beach and RJ Longstreet Elementary, and 28 were returned. With the help of donors Terri and Carl Vasile of EXIT Real Estate Property Solutions, the foundation was able to accept all applications for a total of $13,146.07 of funding to help 10 schools and over 2,700 students.
"This type of program is unlike anyone in the area is doing, which is the premise of our non-profit so fits right into our wheelhouse," said Maria Mills-Benat, co-founder and president of Foundation 37 in a press release. "We hope this program keeps teachers from putting so much of their own money into their students and classrooms. We want to raise awareness of the problem in Volusia County and help with the solution."
The Our Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Council 8086 recently held its third-annual Duck Derby, and parishioner Fred Caputo won the $1,000 grand prize.
He was one of four people who received cash prizes, all of which came to a total of $1,800. All funds raised helped the Knights support its Faith in Action charity program, like the Coats for Kids initiative that provides coats for children during the winter. This year's derby helped the Knights double the amount of coats from past years.
Since March, more than 50 Council members were busy selling chances to "rescue ducks" in the derby, which took place on Sept. 29 during the annual Port Orange Family Days.Over 1,700 numbered plastic ducks were released in the City Center pond, and Knights paddled to rescue the four winning ducks.
David Hermanson collected $500 for placing second, Linda Blair took third place for $200 and Dan Cox collected $100 for fourth place. Cox donated the funds back to the Council's charities.
Club Pilates, one of the largest Pilates franchises in the nation, opened a new location in Port Orange on Oct. 17.
The studio, located at 3817 S. Nova Road, suite 102, offers members full-body workouts that improve posture, balance, flexibility and strength, according to a
press release. Members can choose from four class levels and eight signature group class formats that utilize different equipment.
The studio is owned by Wayne and Nancy Authelet, of Port Orange. Wayne Authelet is a Navy veteran, and as such, is familiar with a high impact, high intensity workout. The couple was impressed with the kind of workout Club Pilate offered without stress and pounding on joints, and wanted to bring this concept to more communities, a press release states.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Volusia County Chapter 316 will hold its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 5810 S. Williamson Blvd.

The Rotary Club of Port Orange-South Daytona recently held its 19th-annual golf tournament at Cypress Head Golf Club, which raised $7,000 thanks to 144 participating golfers.
Proceeds from the sold-out event will help support the Community Partnerships for Children.
The Port Orange Democratic Club will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church, located at 4662 S. Clyde Morris Blvd.
There will be a social half hour with light refreshments from 6:30-7 p.m, followed by the meeting. All Democrats and individuals interested in supporting ideals are welcome at the Club’s meetings.
