AdventHealth Palm Coast hosted the Pink Army 5K and 1-Mile Pet-Friendly Fun Walk Sunday, Oct. 13, at 7:45 a.m.
All of the proceeds will provide mammograms, breast ultrasounds, stereotactic breast biopsies, education and more to aid in the early detection of breast cancer.
Throughout October, the AdventHealth facilities in Flagler, Lake and Volusia counties will host an array of events to celebrate women’s health and help fight breast cancer. Events range from Zumba classes to women’s health expos, as well as luncheons and 5K races. In addition, AdventHealth will perform 3D mammograms for $30 during the month.
Flagler County’s departments of Emergency Management and Economic Opportunity have teamed up to provide a pair of free workshops which will teach small businesses how to be prepared before, during and after a disaster.
“Teresa Battuello – who has both an extensive business background and emergency management training – will provide expert instruction and guidance so that businesses will come away with planning tools that will allow them to initiate the preparation that will allow them to recover rapidly after a disaster,” said Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord.
Battuello is among the International Economic Development Council’s expert volunteers selected to teach best practices for protecting businesses facing any emergency.
“Her 30 years of experience, knowledge, and skills are outstanding,” said Helga van Eckert, executive director of the Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity. “We are very fortunate to have her present this crucial information to our local businesses.”
The workshops will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 at Building 3 of the Emergency Operations Center, 1769 East Moody Boulevard, Bunnell. Those interested in attending should RSVP to flaglerbizworkshop.eventbrite.com.
Crazy Sock Divas had their 3rd Annual Party In Pink Zumbathon fundraiser Sunday, Oct. 6 with MPower Fitness. in case any of them can be used in an upcoming issue. It was their largest fundraiser of the year, and through ticket sales and raffles they raised $1,196.83 for the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention, a grant that annually generates over $3 million for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. There were 12 local businesses on-site that contributed to the raffle to help raise money for the cause.
A group of Flagler students have created a project called Flagler County Sports S.W.A.P. (Students Wanting Athletic Participation). The goal of the group is to provide gently-used sports equipment to children of all ages so that they are able to play sports, regardless of their family's ability to afford the necessary equipment. Part of S.W.A.P. is to collect donations of used equipment from athletes and allow them to trade up to the things they need next. They will not deny a child the equipment they need if they are not able to make a donation of used equipment. The group exists across Flagler Palm Coast High School, Matanzas High School and Indian Trails Middle School.
Flagler Business Women's annual Woman of the Year Celebration on Oct. 21, 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn will honor Diane Wasney, local chocolatier and businesswoman.
Flagler County this week launched a Leadership Academy dedicated to developing the potential of county staff to further professionalize the agency and to establish succession planning.
“It is structured like the programs undertaken by Fortune 500 companies,” said Dr. Joe Saviak, executive director of the Flagler Sheriff’s Leadership Institute, who is facilitating the program along with County Administrator Jerry Cameron. “It will strengthen the organizational structure, the performance and the retention of employees.”
Fewer than 20 staff members are participating in the academy, including two from the Sheriff’s Office and two from the Tax Collector’s Office.
The class size of the Leadership Academy is limited to promote and encourage a high level of student engagement. Materials and methodology are in line with graduate-level coursework.
“You cannot grow people unless you empower them,” Cameron said. “You have to put them in a situation where they are responsible for the outcomes in their areas. It’s all about teamwork, because we are much better together.”
Chris Bruce, founder of All Pro Dad at Old Kings Elementary, is starting a second Flagler chapter of the group at Wadsworth Elementary School. All Pro Dad is part of the Family First non-profit and calls itself "a fatherhood program designed to inspire fathers around the world to be the best dad, husband and person they can be." The chapter's first meeting will be held at the media center at Wadsworth Elementary Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:45 p.m.
