Brian Jones, of Palm Coast, will participate in “Race Across America” in June, in support of his best friends George Pollock, who has been diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.
Jones has always been an avid bicyclist; he began racing at the age of 14, and at 16 he began participating in Pro/1/2 races around the county, often racing 60 events a year. This year will be his 46th year of racing bicycles. When Pollock asked him to be on an eight-man team to do the “Race Across America,” he jumped at the chance. In their first attempt in 2017, the FSHD (7 men and 1 woman) pedaled 3100 miles in six days, placing 10th in the competition. The team will be participating again in June. Have a daughter or son with big dreams of being a mermaid? There is now a local opportunity for them to get that chance.
Palm Coasts Parks & Recreation will offer its first-ever mermaid class for children ages 6-11. The classes will be taught by Cassie Courchesne, a city of Palm Coast Swim Instructor and Lifeguard who teaches swim classes and some specialty aquatics classes.
“I wanted to start the mermaid class to make the dreams of little boys and girls come true all over Palm Coast,” said Courchesne a press release. “Putting on this tail and swimming gracefully through the water allows you to enter a world of fun imagination and that is so important for children to have.”
Participants must provide their own tail and will learn proper swimming techniques, fluke splashes and how to correctly care for a mermaid tail.
To qualify for the class, children need to know how to swim as they will have to pass several prerequisites, such as swim 50 yards without assistance, float on front and back without assistance, roll from back to front and be comfortable in deep water. Prerequisites will be tested on May 25 at noon.
This class will be held during two summer sessions. Session 1 will be held June 1-29; Session 2 will be held July 6-27. The classes will be held on Saturdays from 4:15-5:15 p.m. at the Palm Coast Aquatics Center. The cost is $25 per session.

AdventHealth Palm Coast’s medical executive committee awarded four local graduating high school students with $750 scholarships, totaling $3,000, on May 8, according to a press release.
This year’s recipients were Flagler Palm Coast High School students Keilee Gocking, Marianne Trecki and Prosperity Wright, and Matanzas High School student Taylor Phillips.
The medical executive committee has provided scholarships to Flagler County high school students since 2004. Graduating seniors complete an application and the winners are chosen from various criteria, including class rank, SAT and ACT scores, extra-curricular activities and an interest in pursuing medical field-related studies.
The Irish Social Club of Palm Coast held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 8,
at the Elks Club in Palm Coast. The club presented $1,000 scholarship award to
Tara Tallaksen, a graduating senior from Flagler Palm Coast High School. Tara was a member of the track and field team and captain of the volleyball team, as well as a lifeguard at Flagler Beach and a volunteer tutor for special needs students.
Her great-grandmother came from Ireland in the early 1900s as a teenager. Her grandmother was very proud of her Irish heritage and told many stories of their Irish family traditions.
This month, the club also donated supplies and monetary donations to the Whispering Meadows Ranch.
