Matanzas’ girls golf team had an outstanding year in 2018. The Pirates beat rival Flagler Palm Coast in their match on Sept. 18, and the Pirates’ No. 1 player, Caitlynn Reuter individually qualified for the FHSAA state tournament after firing a career-low 72 at the regional on Oct. 22.
Entering the 2019 season, Reuter has since graduated, but the Pirates still return some talent who could help Matanzas reach the state tournament as a team.
Beatrice Dietz often battled Reuter for the No. 1 spot last season. Now, that spot is all hers. Pirates coach Brandie Alred said Dietz worked hard throughout the summer — on the golf course and in the weight room.
“I think she’s added about 15 to 20 yards in distance,” Alred said. “She’s just so much stronger now.”
Matanzas is in a new district and a new region this season. In addition, three teams, instead of two teams, will qualify to advance to the state tournament out of regionals.
“With a lot of hard work, we could possibly make it there this year,” Alred said.
