Spruce Creek girls golf coach Chuck Kandt opened up his 15th season with the team with a win over Matanzas. The Hawks defeated Matanzas with a total score of 175 to the Pirates' 202 on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 19, at Crane Lakes Golf Club.
The Hawks were led by Takara O'Brien (40), Julia Messick (41), Chelsea Klockenga (46) and Ashna Sai (48).
"When you're a coach, it's like the next thing to being a parent," Kandt said of his time with the team. "You're the facilitator of their athletic experience in high school. It's a fun thing to do."
The Hawks have lacked a star player in recent years, so Kandt believes the key to success is consistency.
"We have to take it one shot at a time," he said.
