With the postseason on the horizon, Mainland coach Scott Wilson is doing everything he can to prepare his team.
On Thursday, Oct. 25 — the night before Mainland played its final game of the regular season — Wilson made the 250-mile trek to Miami to watch Northwestern take on Miami Norland — teams the Buccaneers have a good shot at facing in the playoffs.
The Buccaneers had further opportunities to fine tune their execution against their storied rival Seabreeze the following night. Propelled by 86 rushing yards and three touchdown from senior running back D’Andre McMillian, the Buccaneers (7-3) dominated the Sandcrabs 43-0 on Friday, Oct. 26, at Daytona Stadium. It was Mainland’s eighth-straight victory over the Sandcrabs.
The Buccaneers led 36-0 after halftime, prompting a running clock in the second half, which allowed Wilson to give guys deeper on the bench playing time.
“I was impressed with a lot of our young guys who got in,” he said. “That’s what you want as a program: to get the young guys in and get them some experience.”
The Buccaneers have a bye in Week 11. The postseason starts the week after.
McMillian, who capped off the regular season with 18 total touchdowns (16 rushing, 2 receiving), thinks the Buccaneers are playing their best football.
“We’ve been working hard in practice. We’ve been paying attention,” he said. “We haven’t been lacking or slacking — none of that.”
