On the first Saturday of every May for the last 28 years, the Halifax Sport Fishing Club has hosted a fishing tournament dedicated to enriching the lives of special needs individuals. Through donations, participants are provided with their own rod, reel, bait, and lunch. Fifty-seven participants, along with their caregivers, showed up at Bethune Park in Port Orange, ready to fish.
The participants were each paired with a volunteer angler to ensure their success. Every participant took home a prize, and those who caught a fish took home a trophy. This event was previously held at the docks underneath the Port Orange Bridge until the hurricanes damaged them.
