More than 100 players set out to have fun while raising money at the Cypress Head Golf Club for the 32nd Annual Mayor's Invitational Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 16. This year, the funds raised will benefit the Port Orange Parks and Recreation Department's youth scholarship fund. Parks and Recreation's mission states, "we are committed to improving your quality of life by providing Parks and Recreation opportunities to meet the changing needs of the community."
"The best thing is that the proceeds from it go to benefit scholarships so we can get kids and the like participating in Port Orange Rec who otherwise wouldn't be able to do some of those activities," Mayor Don Burnette said. "So it's a great time, great event, a lot of fun every year but it goes to a terrific cause."
Recent rain made for a wet golf course and meant that carts were only allowed on the cart paths to avoid damage. The announcement didn't seem to surprise many, however, some commented that it could add to the amount of time it would take to finish.
The format for the tournament was a scramble, a fun and informal team format for more casual golfers playing on a team. Mayor Burnette explained that his favorite part of the day is "being out there with his team, soaking it in and enjoying the friendships and camaraderie, there's nothing like it."
