The Port Orange Parks and Recreation Department officially has its own mascot, known as Rec Man.

The mascot, revealed during the city's Fourth of July Spectacular, "spends his free time fighting off the evildoers who promote negativity and poor sportsmanship," according to a Facebook post by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Peter Ferreira, assistant Parks and Recreation director, said the idea behind bringing in Rec Man was that "the Parks and Recreation Department wanted to take their marketing efforts to the next level and thought that a fictional character, Rec Man, would be an excellent way to do so."

Ferreira said the role of Rec Man, made possible through Kona Ice, is to be a goodwill ambassador in the community for the city's Parks and Recreation Department. The mascot will make appearances at Port Orange's special events and programs and will also be displayed on almost all of the marketing material.
