Mike Turcotte wasn't able to spend much time with his two grandfathers due to their battles with post-traumatic stress disorder.
However, these men, and Turcotte's other family members that have and still service in the military, have inspired him to help others through the Wounded Warrior Project, which serves veterans.
Turcotte, the owner of 4Ever Fitness, and his team are putting together a 5k Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project as well as the Jesus Clinic, which provides healthcare to individuals without medical insurance.
The event would be a first for the 4Ever Fitness team.
"These are two things that I think really need our help and attention," Turcotte said. "Wounded Warrior is pretty special to me because I have people in my family that served and had PTSD."
In addition to Turcotte's grandfathers serving in the military, his father served and his brother is active in the Navy. His brother-in-law is in the National Guard and he has an aunt that worked for the Air Force.
Marc Heinisch, the team leader at 4Ever Fitness, said he is looking forward to being able to localize a national organization like the Wounded Warrior Project. He added that they are also looking at having local veterans participate in the race as well.
As for the Jesus Clinic, Turcotte is familiar with the medical needs in the community through his father, who is a physician, and his mother and stepfather who both volunteer at the clinic.
But Heinisch also has a passion for helping people without medical insurance due to his background.
"I've been really poor in my life where I didn't have any medical treatment," Heinisch said "Personally, I think what the Jesus Clinic does is really amazing."
