Volusia County is among two dozen Florida counties where Publix issued a voluntary recall on beef chuck products, including:
Maria Brous, media and community relations director for Publix, said ground chuck products purchased between June 25 and July 31 should be thrown away or taken to the nearest store for a full refund. The products may be contaminated with E. coli, and the source of contamination has not been determined.
The recall affects Volusia, Flagler, Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, DeSoto, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Lucie and Sumter counties.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state public health and agriculture officials investigated an E. coli illness in Florida and determined raw ground chuck was the cause, according to a FSIS press release. An additional investigation led to 18 other patients, who became ill from July 5 to July 25. These patients had consumed ground chuck products purchased at Public locations.
Products currently for sale in Publix stores are not part of this voluntary recall and should be safe to eat, Brous said.
