Monday's crosstown battle between Spruce Creek and Atlantic was never close.
Kyle Minckler finished the game with six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing), and running back Montez Black scored three times on the ground as Spruce Creek routed its Port Orange rival 63-0.
"I thought we really executed well," head coach Andy Price said. "It's nice to see we could keep the trophy here."
The Hawks and the Sharks did indeed play for a trophy as the Mayor's Cup was up for grabs. Port Orange mayor Donald Burnette was present after the game to give the trophy to the Hawks.
Minckler received an extra pair of hands in wide receiver Hayden Flood, who was playing in his first game of the season after breaking his leg in June. He scored three touchdowns of over 15 yards and finished with a game-high six receptions and 111 receiving yards.
Spruce Creek never saw need to panic or be rushed as the team scored on all but one of its drives. The Hawks sit 2-0 and have outscored their opponents 105-0 after two regular season contests. Spruce Creek led 49-0 going into halftime, and Minckler had all of his six touchdowns in the first half.
Along with a slew of other Central Florida football games this week, Creek and Atlantic were forced to reschedule a game originally slated for Friday.
Atlantic saw its record drop to 0-2, and the team has now been outscored 125-0 in its first two games of the season. The team was without its best receiver in Zamari Davis due to an injury and had trouble moving the ball with consistency. The best performance came from Zaquan Davis, who rushed for 29 yards.
After cruising to a pair of early-season victories, it will become a lot tougher for Spruce Creek next week as the team faces off against Matanzas on Friday. Atlantic will head to Pine Ridge and hopes to notch its first win of the season.
