For seven straight years, when Mainland played a football game at home, the result was a win.
That changed on Monday as Mainland's 30-game home winning streak came to an end following a 35-24 loss to Bartram Trail.
"It's a letdown," wide receiver Brian Jenkins said. "We carry a long legacy and a long tradition here. We carry that on our shoulders to not lose at home, and it's definitely a letdown."
Juice is loose
Jenkins, who also goes by Juice, was Mainland's biggest contributor on offense, as he collected 11 receptions for 148 yards and included a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
He has aspirations to be one of the top players in the area, and in the early season, the senior is proving just that.
Quarterback quandary
Quarterback Jake Novello struggled mightily to find a rhythm as he tossed four interceptions and no touchdowns. The senior missed on several of his throws down the middle of the field and on the sideline against a hounding Bartram Trail defense.
D'Andre McMillian did his best to keep Mainland in it with a 62-yard touchdown run and 138 rushing yards, and Latavies Sylvester added a 19-yard touchdown catch on a screen pass from Novello.
"We need to improve on penalties, personal fouls and all of that. It's a big letdown," McMillian said.
Bartram Trail was led by one of the best prep quarterbacks in the country in Joey Gatewood. Rated at the No. 38 recruit in the nation, he is committed to Auburn to play college football.
Mainland's Julio Thompson was able to corral four sacks as the team's defensive star.
Mainland (1-1) will try to turn things around next week as the team travels to Treasure Coast on Friday.
