When deciding what causes to support in the community, J.B. Birney said he has a heart for many: teen pregnancy, domestic violence and others. But, he told a breakfast crowd on Oct. 3, at Florida Hospital Flagler, "If you help our charity, it'll help yours."
Birney made the case for contributing to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Flagler County, which provides one book per month for the first five years of any child's life. Early brain development and learning to love reading can set a child up for success and help prevent many problems that seem so unsolvable in society, he said.
He also recognized many who support the program, including Dr. Jose Garcia; Dimitriy Schevchenko, of Sunshine Academy, County Commissioner Donald O'Brien; Flagler Beach Rotary President Amanda Bailey and Tim O'Donnell; Young Professionals Group members John Birney Jr., Jaci Centofanti, Hallie Hydrick, Meagan Copeland and Ximena Alfaro.
Sean Palmer spoke as a father whose child benefits from the program and encouraged others to mentor young children.
"Maybe this is a first step to fixing some of our problems," he said.
