Rods and reels covered Flagler Beach Pier on Saturday, June 24, as it officially reopened at 6 a.m. today following nine months of closure to repair the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016.
Palm Coast resident Danny Carter has been fishing on the pier since 2009, and while he normally rests during the weekend and lets others catch fish, today he made an exception.
"I just wanted to be out here for today — for the first day of it being open again," Carter said. "It's long overdue."
A grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the pier on Saturday, July 1 at 9 a.m.
Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney wants to remind surfers that it's the law to keep 150 feet away from either side of the municipal pier while surfing.
"Our historic pier is a cornerstone of our beautiful city, and we’ve all patiently waited for it to re-open," Doughney said in a press release.
The pier will be closed Sunday, July 2 at 11:59 p.m. to Wednesday, July 5 at 6 a.m. in order to secure the Fourth of July fireworks show. Access to the pier will be restricted during the closure.
