As the last firework exploded in the sky, the crowds cheered signaling the end to a full evening’s worth of 4th of July festivities in Port Orange.
This year’s Independence Day celebration got kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at the City Center Complex. However, people had already begun claiming their spots with chairs and blankets to watch the show before that time.
About an hour before the fireworks were slated to start, Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette, along with city council members, took to the stage and gave a brief, yet timely, message about why the celebrations were happening.

“I’ve been coming to this event since I was four years old,” said City Council Member Chace Tramont, District 2. “It’s an honor to stand up here now as one of your representatives. It’s events like these that make a city an actual community.”
For about three and a half hours before the fireworks show, residents spent time walking around the waterfront where children played at the kids’ zones and petting zoo. There was live music from the band, The Prom Kings and The Port Orange Fire Department was on hand giving fire engine tours.

In addition to the nation’s independence, Port Orange had a second reason to celebrate—this year marks a special 150th anniversary since the city was first established in 1867.
“I could not be happier to see so many people have chosen to pursue happiness right here in Port Orange,” Burnett said. “We have 241 years of history as a country and we also celebrate 150 years of history since the founding of our city.”
