“Just Photography” opened at the Flagler County Art League on Saturday, Aug. 12 and will be open to the public through Sept. 5.
“Best of Show” in the FCAL exhibition was a piece called “Bark and Butte” by Lori Vetter in the landscape/seascape category.
FCAL also featured an exhibit of work by students of the Digital Photo Academy at the Southeast Museum of Photography, part of Daytona State College. The show was curated by Christina Katsolis, SMP’s programming director, and the students whose works are on display are age 14 to 17.
The new season will begin with an all-media show opening on Sept. 9, with a theme of “Animals Wild or Not.”

The Flagler County Art League has announced a logo design contest to celebrate its upcoming 40th anniversary in 2018. All artists — adults and students — are invited to submit artwork to be considered for the anniversary logo, which will be used for advertising, social media and more.
Entries should be sent to [email protected] with the email subject line “FCAL 40 logo contest” and include the artist’s name, phone, email address and whether they’re an adult or student. Entries must be in JPEG format, at least 1MB and 300dpi. The submission deadline is Sept. 25. The winner will receive $200, plus one-year membership in FCAL, and the logo will be printed on T-shirts, tote bags, mugs and other materials.
The competition will run from Sept. 1-25. A panel will review the submissions and select the finalists, which will be on display at FCAL from Sept. 25 to Oct. 12. Community members are invited to vote for their favorite design during regular gallery hours: noon to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner will be announced Oct. 14 at the gallery’s opening reception at 6:30 p.m. at FCAL, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite 207C. Questions? Call 986-4668.
The local chapter of The Charmettes Inc. elected the new officers for 2017-2018 during their annual retreat in St. Augustine.
The Charmettes Inc. are a sisterhood of women dedicated to improving the quality of life in their respective communities through advocacy education, service and through supporting cancer research. Monica Oliver, Harriet Holiday and Evelyn Vasquez reside in Palm Coast.

Bryson Foxwell, a junior at Matanzas High School, was recently accepted in the National Society of High School Scholars. In addition to earing a 4.2 GPA, Keefer is the varsity goalie for the Matanzas lacrosse team. He received a certificate and pin for his academic excellence.
The Community Chorus of Palm Coast has appointed Jens Oliva as the new chorus director. Jens is currently the chorus director at Matanzas High School, where his choirs have performed at Disney Candlelight Service and with Community Chorus of Palm Coast’s spring concert.
“I am both honored and excited to begin directing the Community Chorus of Palm Coast,” Oliva said in a press release. “It is my intention to continue the fine work that Linda Hodges has done. Wonderful days lie ahead, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The sea turtle mascot for the 2017 Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup has been named Walter Waterways. Palm Coast asked for name nominations through its Facebook page and then invited community members to vote for their favorite via Facebook or the city website. There were 21 choices of names, and Walter Waterways, which was suggested by Nikita Skrzypinski, received 37 votes.
The 10th annual cleanup will be on Saturday, Sept. 9. Volunteers can register now to help remove trash in and along the Intracoastal, its walkways and canals. The event begins at 8 a.m. at Holland Park, 18 Florida Park Drive. There will be an award ceremony and refreshments for participants at Holland Park after the event, as well.
Pre-registered volunteers may pick up their packages early at the Palm Coast City Hall, Community Wing, 160 Lake Ave., from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2. While supplies are only guaranteed for those who are pre-registered by Aug. 19, anyone is welcome to attend to help the cleanup efforts.
Fitness Promotion Company Crazy Sock Divas is partnering with MPower Fitness and Ovarian Cancer Institute’s TEAM TEAL to bring awareness to ovarian cancer through a Scavenger Hunt Style Challenge that will run from Sept. 1 through the month.
The #TestingForTeal Challenge is made up of 12 challenges from participating businesses MPower Fitness, Jukido Jujitsu Academy, Z Wave Surf Shop, Teamwork Custom Art and Crazy Sock Divas. Challenges range from fun selfies with crazy socks to full-on fitness activities like Zumba or Jujitsu. Each activity will receive a sign off on the scorecards, which will then be submitted at the end of the competition for a chance to win a $100 gift card. Scorecards can be purchased for a $10 donation from MPower Fitness, located at 160 Cypress Point Pkwy Suite D213.
