Two Flagler County Sheriff’s detectives received the American Legion Post 115’s Officer of the Year award on Aug. 14. Detectives Annie Conrad and Jody Glasgow were given the award for their efforts on the Charles Singer disappearance in March and subsequent homicide investigation that led to the arrest of Dorothy Singer on May 8.

“Detectives Conrad and Glasgow did an outstanding job handling the Singer case this year and are deserving of this honor and recognition,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a press release. “They worked tirelessly on this case and put all of their training to good use throughout the investigation. I am proud them.”

Linda Vestal Giving Hands Foundation scholarship luncheon

The Linda Vestal Giving Hands Foundation, a nonprofit established in Bunnell in 2016, is set to award a $1,000 scholarship to a recent Flagler Palm Coast High School graduate to help the student’s desire to pursue a law/criminal justice field in college.

The scholarship award luncheon will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn at 55 Town Center Blvd. Saturday, Aug. 20 from noon to 5 p.m.

The foundation was created to honor Linda Vestal, the former first female officer for Somerset County Sheriff’s Department in Somerset, New Jersey. Vestal retired in Palm Coast and then served on the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department Advisory Council.

The foundation works to raise money for scholarships to give to other needy organizations affiliated with education and to support students pursuing a law/criminal justice field. While tickets to the luncheon are sold out, those interested in supporting the foundation can visit lvgivinghandsfoundation.org.

Remembering local artist Alice Johnson

Alice Johnson, a well-renowned artist, died on Aug. 10. A celebration of Johnson’s life was held Aug. 15 at Palm Coast United Methodist Church. Attendees were asked to wear colorful clothes to celebrate Johnson and her impact in the community.

“My mother lived life with gusto, and she hated morbid all black funerals with people mouning and hollering,” Johnson’s daughter, Deirdre M. Johnson-Taylor, said on Facebook. “She had a good life and left instructions for us not to have a traditional service. We are respecting her wishes. ”

Back-to-school donations

To give back to the community, Christ Lutheran Church donated school supplies to Bunnell Elementary for the upcoming school year. Pastor Judy Mattson collected donations of notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, crayons and more from the congregation. The donations filled the cargo space of an SUV, and the school is appreciative of the materials.
