The Half Wall's Port Orange location and Delta Life Fitness hosted over 20 drinking yogis in its dining area on Saturday to enjoy Brewga: an afternoon of yoga — as long as there was a beer in hand.
“Delta Life basically donated their time to teach the yoga class,” Half Wall marketing director Kay McKenney said. “They’re trying to get more women to go to their fitness center, but it helps us too because they are all buying beer.”
Daytona Beach-based Delta Life Fitness brought the idea to Half Wall about using their restaurant as a space to do the eclectic activity. Beer and yoga is thought to have originally started as a popular combination in Germany.
“We did a yoga wine night that went pretty well, but we figured more people drink beer,” said Kelley Griffin of Delta Fitness. “It’s easier to hold a bottle of beer than a glass of wine.”
Katherine Wise, of Delta Fitness, started her health journey as an 18-year-old. She would lose 20 pounds, then gain it back and lose it all again in the span of six months. It turned out Wise had thyroid cancer, and was forced to remove her thyroid and go through radiation treatments.
Now Wise takes medication, but she also realizes how essential it is for her body to be in peak shape. Others in the community joined in, with a pint and a pose.
