Gail Warner, who has a hobby of creating clothes from discarded items to encourage recycling, doesn’t miss her chance to create something special for Halloween. This year, she dressed as “Merlot,” while her husband was a corkscrew. They were able to show off their creations at an early Halloween party at the home of Fred Sergeant, who says having the party the week before the holiday results in a big turnout each year.
For her skirt, she borrowed a friend’s table saw and sawed 700 corks in half.
“Everyone saved their corks for me,” she said.
She also used cardboard from a case of wine and plastic wine glasses from a discount store.
Her husband was a corkscrew, and the “screw” part was taken from a device that screws into the ground for a dog leash and other “up-cycled” items including a flexible pipe and bicycle gears.
Warner also made a costume for her friend, Susan Hawthorne, called “the cloud,” the data storage device. Her skirt, which held photos and documents, was made of 140 shredded plastic bags.
They had to be careful with their costumes because they plan to wear them Friday at a party at the Halifax Plantation Pub.
