Kevin Treur, head coach for the Red Sox 12U team, mentioned to the parents that assistant coach James Vollinger deemed them as a bunch of overachievers. After winning just three games throughout the season, they had just won the Ormond Beach Youth Baseball Association 12U championship 13-4 over the Brewers on Friday, May 13, at Nova Community Park.
“It just all came together for us,” Treur said. “We only went through two pitchers during the game. They didn’t pitch fast, but they threw strikes, and, when the Brewers hit, our defense made plays.”
The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the majority of their runs came in the last three innings, as they were frequently walked and then stole bases to reach home plate.
“One of the nice things about this team,” Truer said, “is that we didn’t have a bunch of competitive baseball team, but we just kept working hard, and they kept getting better.”
