Matanzas High School’s Forensic Science teacher Mrs. Gloria collaborated with Flagler Palm Coast High School’s i3 Academy and Art teacher Courtney VandeBunte to create a Forensic Fair on May 5 at MHS. For a more authentic experience, members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s CSI team volunteered their time to create three mock crime scenes: a stabbing, a shooting and a hanging.
MHS’s Forensic Science students were given one of two tasks: either photograph the scene, or mark evidence with crime scene placards. FPC’s i3 Academy’s drawing students went through each crime scene to do a drawing of the crime scene and to document where evidence laid. In a real situation the reason for drawing sketches is to be able to have all facts about the crime scene for court.
The Forensic Fair allowed MHS students to have a hands-on experience with the mock crime scenes and allowed them to practice their crime scene skills. For FPC students it gave them the opportunity to practice their drawing skills by sketching out the mock crime scene. Prior to the fair, MHS students provided physical descriptions of teachers. Those descriptions were then sent to the art students from FPC who then did rendered drawings of those provided descriptions. VandeBunte hung the drawings next to photographs of the teachers at the fair, which showed the true talent that these students have to offer and their ability to collaborate with one another.
