Sept. 5
Jury duty scam
10:08 a.m. — First Block of Talaquah Boulevard
Fraud. The victim received a call from an alleged officer in the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. He said he had a warrant for her arrest because she did not show up for jury duty.
She was told to bring $1,000 in a PayPal card so he could free her warrant and get an appointment with the judge to clear her name.
She received calls every step of the way from two alleged officers as she bought two $500 PayPal cards. She gave the suspects the pin numbers for PayPal cards over the phone. She said she didn’t realize that would allow the suspects to cash in the cards.
She became suspicious, and contacted the Sheriff’s Office. She was told the names of officers she was given over the phone were fake.
In a similar event on the same day, a different victim went to a store to buy PayPal card after receiving a call, and the clerk told her it was a fraud, so she went to the police.

Foreign embassy scam
8:15 p.m. — First Block of Falls Way Drive
Information. The victim received a call from an alleged member of the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic. He said her grandson was being held because marijuana was found in his car during a traffic stop. They needed $990 for him to be released.
Someone who sounded like her grandson then got on the phone and repeated the information. The “official” then gave her a routing number to send the money.
The victim sent the money as instructed.
The caller had told her not to contact a family member regarding the incident, but she decided to call her daughter-in-law. She asked about the location of her grandson and was told he was in his bedroom.
A search of the phone number used by the suspect was traced to Quebec, Canada.
No damage done
10:37 a.m. — 100 Block of Osceola Avenue
Information. A witness stopped at the school office and said a car alarm was sounding in the parking lot. He said someone was hitting golf balls over the fence into the lot.
The officer was unable to find any golf balls or damaged cars. There were egg shells around two cars, but there was no damage to any vehicle.
A neighbor said he had been hitting old beer cans with a golf club in his yard, but had not launched any over the fence. There were no beer cans in the parking lot.
Didn’t steal that one
8:21 p.m. — 1500 Block of North U.S. 1
Burglary. The motel manager reported that a TV had been stolen from a room. The handy man said admitted to stealing another TV from a different room but did not steal that one.
The 32-inch TV was valued at $200. The manager did not have a record of the last time the room was occupied, so a time frame could not be established.
