The Flagler County Art League held an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 12 for “Memories in the Making” and “It’s About Time.” “Memories in the Making” is a program through the Alzheimer’s Association that offers patients a way to voice their emotions and memories. The process of creating art gives an Alzheimer patient a venue to focus on the ability to create rather than all the disabilities suffered through having the disease. Oftentimes an Alzheimer patient tends to isolate themselves in fear of not being capable of executing a task. Creating art is an activity that even the most severe Alzheimer’s patients are capable of producing.
The exhibition features 50 paintings produced by Alzheimer patients. One patient, Jerry Publicover, told retired Associate Director Martha Purdy an insight on his painting “Road to Somewhere.”
“I am very confused and unsure where the journey is taking me, but the road is taking me there,” Publicover recalled. “I had nothing in mind where the road went, so to speak. The road widens and narrows just like Alzheimer’s does.” For Publicover painting often creates new ideas and helps him recall old memories.
The program is based out of Orlando, and Alzheimer’s Association CEO Kay Redington would like to implement the program in Flagler County through the help of local artists and volunteers.
The “It’s About Time” was a judged exhibition with the passing of time as the theme. Each artist who participated viewed time in a different way which made for a unique collection of artwork. One artist, Ron Wallace, had an interesting interpretation on the theme and created a mixed-media piece with clay sculptures running along the base of a clock, the artwork called, “Running Out of Time.”
Both exhibitions will be open for the public to view from now through Tuesday, Oct. 6.
