Big John will continue on the air

A ceremony at Goliath Radio, 432 S. Nova Road, on Feb. 27 marked a change in ownership for the local station. Big John, former County Councilman, donated the station to Bethune-Cookman University.

The community-based station is now CAT 1380 AM. Big John’s afternoon talk show will continue in its daily slot, but plans call for the name of the show to be changed from Big Talk to Gov Stuff, according to a station spokeswoman

She said the only change currently planned is that more programming may be added.

Mayor Ed Kelley, Zone 3 Commissioner Rick Boehm and City Manager Joyce Shanahan attended the ceremony.

Police officers promoted

Ormond Beach Police Chief Henry Osterkamp announced recently that Detective Tom Larsen has been promoted to corporal and Corporal Tom Elkins has been promoted to sergeant. Both men will be assigned to the patrol division.

Larsen, an officer since 2000, is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He has served as patrol officer, crisis negotiator, child abduction response team member, field training officer, traffic homicide investigator and union representative.

Elkins has been patrol officer, field training officer, detective and accreditation manager. He is pursuing his associates degree in Criminal Justice. He serves as the department’s Police Explorer supervisor.
