Virus program attracts hacker
1:27 p.m. — First Block of Horseshoe Falls Drive.
Fraud.
The victim said she purchased a virus protection program from a computer company, which installed the program.
Later, she received a call from a different company saying their server crashed and they could not support the program. The voice, which had a foreign accent, said if she gave him access to the computer and some personal information, he would remove the program and refund her money. She received several calls over the next few days from different people about the matter. One night, they took over her computer, and after several hours of waiting, she went to bed.
The next day she received several more calls. She discovered they had created a Western Union account to supposedly refund her money. She called Western Union and cancelled the account. Also, there was a holding balance of $399, so she cancelled her credit card.
She called the original company, and they said she still had an active subscription for the virus program.
The victim is not out any money, but wanted the incident documented so police would be aware of the scam.

If there’s a gun, it’s not mine
2:14 a.m. — North Beach Street and West Granada Boulevard.
Traffic Stop.
While operating moving radar, the officer noticed a Nissan Altima going 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. After stopping the car, the officer could smell a strong odor of marijuana.
Before the officer began a search of the car, the driver spontaneously uttered that he didn’t think anything illegal was in the car, but if a gun was found, he would have no knowledge of it.
The officer found a black, fully loaded, Smith and Wesson handgun under the front passenger seat. A check of the serial number did not show a theft.
Since no one in the car had any knowledge of the gun, it was taken to the police department for safekeeping. The driver was told that if he finds the gun owner, he should have him pick up the gun at the station with proper documentation.
The driver was given a ticket for speeding.

Just look for the sticky seat
6:34 p.m. — 100 Block of South Nova Road.
Theft.
The victim said he and his friend left their bicycles outside the store unsecured and went inside. When they came back out, his bike was missing. He said it was black but he didn’t know the brand. He advised there should be a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of the seat. He said he was given the bike by a friend and its estimated value is $50.
The bike was not entered as stolen because the serial number was not known.
