The Division I team played their games in Tavares on the weekend.
There was a fan tunnel, a drumline, crowded bleachers and frequent chants of “Let’s go, Sea-breeze!” Seabreeze High School made its Special Olympics Project Unify team feel special before, during and after their games on Friday, Dec. 4, at Seabreeze.
“It’s not that often that our kids get to shine, to be a part of a team,” coach Vanessa Emerson said. “And, we have a very supportive administration. We told them what we wanted to do, and they just asked what they could do for us.”
The Seabreeze drumline welcomed all of the athletes into the gym, and the Best Buddy Club and Seabreeze Spirit Club greeted them, forming a tunnel. The cheerleaders made signs that were hung up around the gym for the games. There were other volunteers who provided game commentary, recorded stats and officiated the game. Although Seabreeze was not victorious in their games, the athletes walked off the court joyfully, and, as they exited the gym, they left to a student body ovation.
