Cops Corner: There's crime afoot

July 23

Crime solution is a shoe in

11:31 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. 

Grand Theft. The restaurant manager said he terminated an employee who threw his server’s book to him without the money owed the business. He chased the suspect but he got away.

The suspect was later found at his residence. He denied taking any money and said it was in the server’s book that he threw on the ground.

The suspect only had a couple of hundred dollars on him. He hesitated when the officers asked him to take off his shoes.

Nothing was found in his right shoe, but as the officer began to take off his left shoe, the suspect said, “I have cash in that shoe.” The officer found $820 in cash in the shoe. The suspect said he does not have a bank account and always keeps money in his shoe.

The money was given to the victim and the suspect was transported to jail.

July 28

Sneaky thief

11:27 a.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard

Burglary of Conveyance. The witness said she was waiting behind the suspects’ vehicle in the store parking lot. She assumed they were waiting for a parking spot. She then saw a male exit the vehicle, squat down and walk over to a parked car where the victim was loading groceries into the trunk.

The suspect opened the passenger door, removed a purse and went back to his vehicle. As the suspects drove away, the witness heard the victim yell, “My purse.”

The witness followed the suspects down Granada Boulevard as they threw objects from the car, but then decided to stop following with they made a turn on Tymber Creek Road.

An officer responding to the call recovered the purse and other items on the road. The victim said everything was recovered except her keys, change purse and $100 in cash.

Using the suspect’s tag number, the officer was able to find a photo of the owner of the suspect car, but the witness could not pick them out of a photo lineup.

The victim was instructed to change her home door locks.

July 29

Five minutes too long

6:04 p.m. — 100 Block of Sage Brush Trail

Burglary of Conveyance. The victim said she left her car in the parking lot of the day care center to pick up her child. She left her purse on the driver’s seat and locked the door.

When she returned five minutes later, the window was smashed out and the purse was gone. She said she had noticed a white Dodge Magnum driving up and down the street, which she thought was suspicious.

August 3

No bank account for you

11:47 a.m. — 600 Block of Wellington Station Boulevard. 

Fraud. The victim was on a want-ad type website and responded a post to advertise a soft drink with a sticker on his vehicle. He later received a check from a community college in the Florida Keys with in the amount of $2,580.

He went to cash the check and it was denied. He said the bank made him sign a paper but would not tell him why they would not cash the check.

He then went to his own bank, and was told the check was fraudulent. The bank told him his account would be frozen for trying to cash the fraudulent check and he would not be allowed to have an account for the rest of his life.

The victim has tried to call the suspect on the phone but the suspect hung up on him.
