The Domestic Abuse Council celebrated its "Raise the Roof" campaign to replace the roof on its shelter.

Rainy weather and roof leaks was a common combination for the Domestic Abuse Council shelters.

But thanks to two dozen community leaders, a CDBG grant from Volusia County, a private foundation

donation, gifts from private individuals and in-kind donations from experts in engineering and roofing

consultants, the council was able to replace the roof through their “Raise the Roof” campaign. The total commercial project cost about $150,000.

"Because of the generosity of the professionals, including Dickens & Associates Engineering and ECS Florida who aided us in launching this project, we saved about $50,000,” CEO for the Domestic Abuse Council Cheryl Fuller said. “If they hadn't donated their services, we would have had to spend our reserves to complete the roof replacement.”

In the last two years, shelter bedrooms had to close during torrential rainfall. Since the roof completion in August, no rooms have closed because of water penetration and the emergency shelter was full, serving 102 different individuals with over 1200 bed-nights.

In the spring of 2012, the shelter initiated a waiting list due to the demand.

"Since demand for the shelter continues to increase, we are looking forward to not have to close rooms because of rainy weather and roof leaks," Shelter Manager Danielle Stansbury said.
