34 kids made a splash at the Ormond Beach YMCA June 20.

The pool at the Ormond Beach YMCA was crowded June 20 with young swimmers getting a hands-on lesson in water safety.

As a part of The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a simultaneous lesson involving 32,450 participants in over 13 countries, the Volusia Flagler YMCA hosted their swimming lesson at the Ormond Beach YMCA for 35 local kids. The WLSL holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson and attempted to beat it again this year.

Drowning still remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children 1 to 5 years old and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14 years old.

Teresa Rogers, CEO of Volusia Flagler YMCA, said teaching kids water safety was the most important lesson.

“We live in Florida,” Rogers said. “There is water everywhere. Kids are drowning in retention ponds. Swim lessons are great but if they can learn simple water safety that could save somebody’s life.”
