Sleeping it off
4 p.m. — 200 Block of North Nova Road. Alcoholic Beverages. After receiving a call about an intoxicated person, the officer observed the suspect sleeping on the ground behind a grocery store. He was sleeping in a fetal position holding a large bottle of wine that was almost empty.
The officer asked the suspect why he was sleeping there and if he was OK. The suspect attempted to answer, but he slurred his words so much he could not be understood. EVAC personnel said he was OK medically and was just intoxicated.
EVAC personnel assisted the officer in helping the suspect to his feet and walking him to the police car. The suspect could hardly move under his own power and smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage.
The suspect’s ID showed an address that was just around the corner. An officer went to the residence to find someone who could take care of him but no one was there.
The officers located a phone number and called one of the suspect’s family members but they said they did not want to come and get him. The family member contacted the suspect’s mother and she said she did not want to care for him and didn’t care if he went to jail or not.
The Stewart-Marchman facility said they had enough beds, but due to his level of intoxication, they would not take him. The suspect was transported to Halifax Health under the Marchman Act.

Staying at the foreclosure motel
8:22 p.m. — 100 Block of Midway Avenue. Civil Complaint. The police were told that two people were inside a residence that should be empty.
Upon arrival, the officer was approached by the suspect who asked why officers were at the location. The officer asked if he was staying there, and he said he was. He went on to say that the owner gave him a key and said he could stay there until the bank took possession of the property. He did not know the name of the owner.
The suspect showed the officers a key and the officers found that it was the key to the residence.
A search on the Internet showed that the property belonged to Bank of America. The officer attempted to call the bank but it was after hours so he was unsuccessful.
The officers called the civil division of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, and the person said the best course of action to have the suspect removed from the residence would be to contact Bank of America during normal business hours and have them proceed through a civil process.
The suspect was allowed to remain at the residence pending further investigation.
