The Confederate Sons Association of Florida honor Confederate Memorial Day with cemetery service.

Cannons were fired, and Civil War-era outfits were worn on Sunday, in honor of Confederate Memorial Day.

Held at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery and hosted by the Confederate Sons Association of Florida, it’s an annual event to pay tribute to fallen Confederate soldiers.

“April 26 is Confederate Memorial Day in Florida,” re-enactor Ron Alcorn said. “We’re celebrating the lives of the Confederates buried here.”

Tony Corn, retired police officer, long-time Ormond Beach resident and CSAF member, said the event started seven or eight years ago when they started taking care of Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery.

“My whole family is buried here,” Corn said. “We cut limbs off trees, pick up trash and take care of the place. This is a historic area, and we honor all veterans that are buried here. Some of the families that were buried here are the original Ormond people. Some people now don’t realize the historic nature of this place.”

“If you don’t keep talking about it,” re-enactor Gene Hendrickson said, “you’re going to forget about it.”
