Every marked Flagler County Sheriff’s Office vehicle that serves the city of Palm Coast will soon be equipped with an automatic electronic defibrillator.

The City Council on Sept. 4 unanimously approved spending $90,400 to purchase 80 defibrillators. The money comes from the city’s technology fund, which is collected over time from traffic citations given out (not red light camera citations).

The money is specifically earmarked for the Sheriff’s Office and the city to spend together. Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said the money has been saved up over the years to be spent on a worthwhile project, rather than spending a few hundred dollars each year.

Often times, deputies are the first to respond to a scene, and Sheriff Jim Manfre said having his deputies equipped with AEDs could go a long way in saving lives.

“I believe this is a great investment in the health and welfare of our community,” he said.
