A tractor-trailer and a flatbed truck crashed on Wednesday night, shutting down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 for a few hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Walter Stargell, 48, of College Park, Ga., was traveling southbound on I-95 in the outside lane in his tractor-trailer around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday

Santiago Cruz, 50, of LaBelle, was also traveling southbound in a flatbed truck carrying another truck on its bed, directly in front of Stargell.

When Stargell saw Cruz in front, he attempted to change lanes in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid a collision, according to FHP report.

The passenger’s side of Stargell’s tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side rear of Cruz’s flatbed. Due to the initial collision, Cruz’s vehicle was pushed out of its lane and proceeded to strike the outside barrier wall.

Cruz redirected off the wall and traveled toward the center median, where he then struck the median guardrail, causing the vehicle atop the flatbed to slide off and land on top of the guardrail, the report states.

Stargell stopped in the center median after the crash.

The southbound lanes on I-95 bridge passing over State Road 100 were closed for a few hours as the scene was cleared.

There was no alcohol involvement, according to the report.

Cruz suffered minor injuries, and Stargell was not injured, the report states.
