A local second-hand store helped raise money for a Flagler County pet shelter last weekend.

In the name of second chances, Jane Seaman, owner of Cleo's Closet resale clothing store, hosted a raffle to raise money for Flagler County's Second Chance Rescue, a no-kill animal shelter.

"People are so cruel," Seaman said. "I look at that commercial from SPCA with Sarah McLachlan and I have to leave the room. It's so sad."

Seaman is considering adding a Pitt Bull mix named Luke to her family, which already includes a 15-year-old cocker spaniel and a 20-year-old cat.

Judi Boon, a personal trainer and friend of Seaman, said that the event was fueled by Seamen's love for animals.

"Jane came up with the idea," said Boon. "She's got such a big heart."

Jeanne Nichols, apprentice designer at the Kitchen Gallery, says she attended to support her community.

"I think it gets women together and it helps us become a little more aware of what's going on in neighborhood. Any time you can increase neighborhood awareness, you've made the city a little more powerful."

Some notable donations to the event include Jessica Falkowski, make-up artist for M&G modeling agency, who donated a $75 holiday makeover, and Robert Santana, a local artist who donated his artistic abilities for the grand prize of a portrait of pet or person.

"We raised some money and may have one dog adopted," said Seaman. "Just having one of these dogs going to a good home makes it a great success. We want to say thank you to everyone that attended and supported the effort."
