Detectives with the Flagler Beach Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man who wore an ape mask during an attempted robbery.

Just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, the suspect approached a man at the ATM machine at the SunTrust bank at 323 Moody Blvd., police said.

The suspect, described by police as a white male about 6-feet tall with a thin build, was wearing khaki pants, a black T-shirt, and a gorilla/Planet of the Apes mask. He approached the victim and demanded his money.

The victim was startled when he saw the subject wearing the mask and punched the suspect on the left side of his face or head, police said.

The victim told police that he may have injured the suspect, who may now have a black eye or other bruising on the left side of the face.

Video surveillance from the bank could be made available soon, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information about this incident or a person who may own a similar mask is asked to call Detective L. Williams at 585-2626 or Sgt. Bill Shamp at 931-8284.
