Brownie Troop 1437 and Senior Troop 958 are asking residents to buy boxes of cookies that can be distributed at camps put on by the Brain Injury Association of Florida, in Kyle Forgie’s name. Contact Nicole Musselman at 338-7612.

Forgie, a band member at Matanzas High School, was hit by a car in December as he rode his bicycle, leaving him in a coma. According to his Facebook, Forgie was scheduled to return home if his surgery on Thursday went well.
 

+ Wilkenson places third at state essay contest
Matanzas High School student Chad Wilkenson won first place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest put on by Veterans of Foreign War Post 8696 and its Ladies Auxiliary. Wilkenson was also the first-place winner at the District 19 level and the third-place winner at the state level.

This year’s program had 28 high school students and 289 middle and elementary students. The 2012 Voice of Democracy theme was “Is the Constitution still relevant,” and for Patriots Pen: “What I would tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

+ Mia Bella wins big
The Mia Bella competition dance team won several awards including two Platinum Plus Awards, at the Platinum National Dance Competition held at the University of North Florida last weekend, where they competed against 23 other dance studios from Florida and Georgia.

The two dances earning Platinum Plus were the contemporary group piece “All God’s Creatures,” and Samantha Tanenbaum for her solo, “Everywhere I Go.” Tanenbaum also won the highest score of the entire weekend in her division, with the same solo. Shayna Mayes won big, too: She was crowned Miss Petite Platinum.

The following soloists also won first place overall, meaning they were not only top of the category, but in their entire division: Tanenbaum, Mayes, Cayla Skeete, Caroline Rizzo, Jessica Urbstavicius, Laynie Mullins and Maria Sikorski.

All three duos/trios also won first overall in their division: “Universe,” danced by Rizzo and Jazmyne Valenti; “Back Where We Started,” by Tanenbaum and Kari Dutton; and “Gift of a Friend,” by Skeete, Mayes and Angeline Santos.

The group production “Cirque,” featuring all 29 dancers, also won first overalll, as well as the group dances “All God’s Creatures” and “The Lark.”

Choreographer Brie Valenti won three awards for choreography.

Other dancers who participated are Autumn Beaumont, Paige Beaumont, Taylor Davis, Adrianna Fries, Brooke Futch, Kaylee Futch, Kasandra Myers, Brianna O’Brien, Josh Olivo, McKailyn Potts, Jazzarae Powers, Maddie Rezendes, Annalise Roman, Marta Szydlowska, Mariella Trotta, Natalie Valenteychik, Cimone Williams, Emmary Wolff and Sunny Wolff.
