The area of of low pressure area in the Gulf of Mexico now has a 60% chance of tropical depression formation over the next 48 hours, according to the National Weather Service's 1:35 p.m. update.

As a tropical disturbance continues to churn off Florida's west coast, a flood watch will be in effect from late Wednessday night through Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The issue will begin at 2 a.m. Thursday and will expire around 2 p.m. Friday, officials said.

A disturbance in the southern Gulf of Mexico will bring heavy rainfall to portions of north Florida on Thursday and into Friday morning.

A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

The disturbance, which forecasters say has a 50% chance of development, is expected to move northeast across the north Florida and south Georgia area on Thursday and into early Friday morning. The low is expected to produce heavy rainfall, with as much as 4 inches to 6 inches in some areas.

The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season began June 1. The storm, if it becomes named, would be Andrea, and it would be the first of the season.
