A multi-agency awareness campaign against drunk drivers during the recent Memorial Day weekend has concluded with two DUI arrests made and more than 65 traffic citations issued, according to numbers released by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The campaign spanned land and sea as the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s marine unit was joined by the Florida Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in patrolling waterways within Flagler County. These marine units completed 23 stops on the Intracoastal Waterway and issued 23 warnings to boaters. The three-agency effort also resulted in another 39 contacts with boaters which resulted in no enforcement action.

The campaign against drinking and driving launched Friday, May 24, and ended Monday, May 27. In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, the Flagler Beach and Bunnell Police Departments also participated in the enforcement wave. When the weekend ended, 58 traffic warnings had been issued, and two traffic-related arrests were made. One other arrest involved narcotics.

“This cooperative effort was designed to raise the public’s awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving while operating a motor vehicle or a boat. We encourage all motorists and boaters to watch for and call 911 anytime they encounter a dangerous driver on our county roads or waterways,” said Sheriff Jim Manfre.
