The discussion about potentially merging the Flagler Beach Fire Department with Flagler County Fire Rescue is moving forward: City Commissioners have forwarded their questions on the matter to Bruce Campbell, the city’s manager, who will look into them.
Campbell said he hopes to be able to provide the Flagler Beach City Commission with answers to its questions by its June 27 meeting, although there is a chance he may be prepared by the meeting before that, which will be held June 7.
The commission decided at a workshop last month to explore whether merging its fire department with the county’s would save money or increase the level of service given to Flagler Beach residents. The question was raised by Commissioner Kim Carney and met with resistance from other commission members, members of the Flagler Beach Fire Department and some residents, although others were supportive of the idea.
Questions asked by commissioners ranged from what amount of input the city would have in emergency services to how much it would cost to improve Flagler Beach Fire Department’s own quality ratings rather than merging with the county.
The discussion will be reopened once Campbell has finished his research at a publically noticed meeting of the City Commission.
