Ormond Beach Mayor Ed Kelley was the first to donate to the Knights of Columbus Prince of Peace Council 8791’s Tootsie Roll Drive last week. The fundraiser officially starts Saturday, Feb. 23.

Knights, as they do annually, will be standing outside of local Walmarts, Publixes and Winn-Dixies through March 23, collecting donations to their Citizens with Disabilities Campaign in exchange for Tootsie Rolls.

This is the group’s largest fundraiser, and about 90% of its proceeds benefit local organizations and schools that help residents with intellectual disabilities. The rest goes into a statewide charity fund.

The special-ed programs at five city schools, as well as the Arc of Volusia, received $4,725 in grant funds a piece last year from the Knights.

Rev up for a poker run: March 2

The Beaver Bar, at 1105 N. U.S. 1, will be the first stop on the March 2 Helping Hearts Fundraiser Poker Run, to benefit Halifax Health Hospice.

The run will start at 9 a.m., hit the Iron Horse Saloon, Hanky Panky’s, Circus II, Boot Hill Saloon and Roadside Tavern, and end with a barbecue. There will also be live music, auctions and raffles, one of which will be for a plane ride for two in a 1941 WACO UPF 7 open-cockpit biplane.

There will be games, live horse racing, a blackjack tournament, silent and live auctions. Fee: $50 per person, $80 per couple.
