The 70-foot-high pile of burning brush at County Road 304 and U.S 1 that spewed smoke over the southern part of he county Tuesday and Wednesday is under control and might be extinguished within a week.
"It's still smoldering a bit, and the owner off the property out there has heavy equipment on it and is pumping in high volumes of water," Flagler County Fire Chief Don Petitio said. "He may be able to do something by the end of the week."
The fire, on the Strickland Sod Farm property in Bunnell, covered about half of the nine-acre brush pile when it started early Tuesday morning, Petito said.
At this point, officials are not advising motorists to avoid the area, but conditions may still be smoky because of the brush fire and a controlled burn up in Flagler Estates, Petito said.
