With aging equipment, the Palm Coast Fire Department has released a replacement schedule, which includes four new trucks over the next eight years.
“We’re planning for the future,” said Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle.
The new equipment will be bought with cash taken from the city’s fleet maintenance fund. This year, it will be an engine for Fire Station No. 22, which is one of the older stations located on Club House Drive.
The engine currently in use was put into service in 1976.
The fire trucks are typically kept on the front line for 15 to 20 years. After taken off the front line, they are moved to backup for about another 15 years.
The new fire truck will cost about $350,000, Beadle said. The city has about $380,000 budgeted.
The next step, Beadle said, is to put out a request for proposal. After staff evaluates the proposals, recommendations are submitted to City Council for purchase approval. After the contract is signed to build the new fire truck, it will be complete within six to 12 months.
Beadle estimated the new truck would be available for use in about a year.
