Funeral home offers free veteran plots

Craig Flagler Palms has begun offering free grave plots to veterans in its Garden of Freedom when their spouses purchase a plot as well.

The veteran project arose as a way to make grave visits more convenient to families of veterans who live in Flagler County, said Sal Passalaqua, the funeral director and the director of advanced planning for the center. Before Craig Flagler Palms opened its garden, the nearest veteran cemetery was in Jacksonville, he said.

The Garden of Freedom was completed last year, but it has only recently opened for plot purchases. Call 439-5400.

“Veterans gave a lot for this country to allow us to have our freedom,” Passalaqua said. “We wanted to give something back to them.”
