+ Fire update: no new fires, one monitored
According to Flagler County Fire Rescue Capt. Jamey Burnsed, emergency workers are currently monitoring only one wildfire, which was reported May 24.

The only active fire in Flagler is a .3-acre, fully contained blaze, east of Old Kings Road near New Leatherwood Drive.

+ Country music: new radio station approved
America’s music: Country 98.7 FM has been approved for Flagler airwaves. Broadcast will start Aug. 1.

The station is added to the roster of stations managed by David Ayres: WNZF News Radio 1550AM and 106.3 FM, Beach 92.7 FM and Easy Oldies 100.9 FM.

Also, Ayres said he is building new studios now and expanding into another unit.

+ County buys $10,000 of land for Korona fire station
The County Commission approved the purchase of a $10,000, .2-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Korona Fire Station, May 21.

Located on U.S. 1, the parcel is west of a .4-acre parcel of undeveloped land already owned by Flagler.

“It makes sense to buy this land,” said County Administrator Craig Coffey. “(It) is important in the long-term.”

The commission agreed in April to renovate and inhabit the Korona Fire Station, which is currently a part-time volunteer station. And although Volusia County has not yet definitely backed out of its current fire agreement with Flagler (which is what prompted this station’s renovations), securing the land and making the station fully functional ensures that the county will not be backed into a corner later, Coffey said.

Buying the land and completing the station’s engineering, permitting and partial renovation will cost about $40,000. The remainder of the more than $200,000 allocated by the board will be held until an agreement is finalized with Volusia.

“We need to be prepared for the future eventuality of development in that area,” Commission Chairwoman Barbara Revels said. “(That station) can lend itself to getting out in the western part of the county a little quicker … This will eventually have to happen.”
