Joseph Hanzel, of Palm Woast, is a World War II Pacific submarine veteran. He recently joined 100 WWII veterans aboard the 10th Volusia Honor Air flight to visit the WWII Memorial, in Washington, D.C.
There, Hanzel received a surprise visit from his granddaughter and great grandchildren and another surprise visit by his grandson at the Air Force Memorial.
The flight was met on return to Daytona Beach by a crowd of hundreds of well-wishers. The crowd included previous Honor Air participants, school children, bikers, military personnel and other residents who honored the sacrifices these veterans made more than 65 years ago.
