Joseph Hanzel, of Palm Woast, is a World War II Pacific submarine veteran. He recently joined 100 WWII veterans aboard the 10th Volusia Honor Air flight to visit the WWII Memorial, in Washington, D.C.

There, Hanzel received a surprise visit from his granddaughter and great grandchildren and another surprise visit by his grandson at the Air Force Memorial.

The flight was met on return to Daytona Beach by a crowd of hundreds of well-wishers. The crowd included previous Honor Air participants, school children, bikers, military personnel and other residents who honored the sacrifices these veterans made more than 65 years ago. Thanks for your service to our country, Joseph!
