At its May 12 meeting, the 97 members of University Women of Flagler will celebrated its sixth anniversary by awarding scholarships totaling $8,000 to six graduates of Flagler County high schools who are continuing their education at a four-year college or university.

The winners of $1,500 scholarships for 2012 are Morgan Hackworth, Allison Mercer, Ashley Pelose, Jerica Trotter and Julianne Tyrone. An additional $500 was awarded to last year’s scholarship recipient, Amanda Wilson. In its short history, the group will have awarded 30 scholarships totaling nearly $30,000.

Scholarship committee chairs were Florence Knox and Ouida Green. Additionally, the organization has given $5,000 to the Take Stock in Children program, including $1,000 donated this year. Members also donated $300 this year to the “I Can Read Program,” which puts books in the hands of Flagler County’s needy children.

UWF membership requires at least a bachelor’s degree. Members promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth and development of opportunities for women and girls in the Flagler area.

Flagler Country women interested in joining should visit www.uwflagler.org.
